This year we restored 23 small water bodies
If we had to name one project that took off right from the start, it would be the restoration of amphibian breeding waters. This year, seven small water bodies were added to Ropka-Ihaste Nature Reserve, 15 to Otepää Nature Park and one to Alatskivi Landscape Reserve.
This brings the total number of small water bodies built so far to 60, with 40 more to come. This year also saw the completion of a monitoring report on small water bodies restored in previous years.
The creation of small ponds has always attracted a lot of people. This year Postimees reported on the restoration work in Ropka-Ihaste, and experts from two Latvian LIFE projects visited Otepää during the excavation works.
One of these projects, LIFE for Species is currently evaluating the effectiveness of all existing measures for the protection of species in Latvia, including the categories of conservation status of species, and the same action is also planned to be carried out in Estonia. So the Latvians are a step ahead and cooperation with them on species protection is very welcome.
The second project - LatVIANature - is an integrated project like ours, mainly dealing with the restoration of forest and grassland habitats and combating invasive alien species.
